Virtual Smoke School Overview

AeroMet Virtual Smoke School is an EPA-approved alternative to traditional in-person smoke school. It allows trainees to earn their EPA Method 9 Certification through immersive virtual reality.

Certification is performed on a VR headset, so a headset is required to complete certification. We offer two options:

  • A dedicated headset configured for our application, shipped to you from AeroMet Virtual Smoke School.
  • A compatible Meta Quest headset (purchased separately).

Getting Started

The certification process begins with a registration. Each registration includes one free lecture. The lecture is comprehensive and is designed to replace the traditional classroom portion of smoke school.

Once registration is complete and the trainee has been assigned, the training and certification process can begin.

To get started, you will need:

A Registration
An Assigned Trainee
A Compatible VR Headset

How It Works

Once registered and the trainee has been assigned to the headset, they simply log in using their email address when they are ready to certify.

The process begins with standard values. This section shows known opacity values and demonstrates the proper position for reading smoke.

After that, the trainee moves into the practice section. In practice, they observe opacity values, enter their answer, and then receive immediate feedback. The correct answer is shown along with a side-by-side comparison.

Once practice is complete, the trainee begins the certification test. The test includes 25 white readings and 25 black readings.

When the test is complete, results are available instantly.

Results and Recertification

If the trainee passes, their certificate is emailed to them and is also available in their dashboard.

If they do not pass, they may review their readings and retake the test as many times as needed until they pass.

When it is time to recertify, we will send a reminder email.
