Our Approach

Virtual Smoke School is designed to be flexible and straightforward. Register, assign trainees, complete the lecture, and then certify in VR—on your schedule.

This page provides a practical look at the overall process. For a broader explanation of how the system works, please visit our Overview page .

Getting Started

The process begins with registration. Each trainee needs their own registration, but a headset can be shared. Each registration also includes one free lecture.

1. Register

If you already have a compatible VR headset , simply select the Registration Only option.

If you do not have a headset yet, you can choose one of our dedicated headset options or use your own compatible Meta Quest headset.

2. Assign Trainees

The contact person receives an email with access to their dashboard, where they assign each trainee to a registration.

3. Complete the Lecture

Each assigned trainee receives login details and can complete the lecture before beginning VR certification.

Each individual needs their own registration. A headset can be shared between trainees.

Certification Flow

When the trainee is ready, they sign in to the headset and move through the certification process step by step.

4. Sign In and Start

The trainee signs in with their email address and follows the on-screen prompts to begin.

5. Review Standard Values

Before testing, the trainee reviews standard values to see examples of white and black smoke at known opacities.

6. Practice

The trainee practices reading opacity values and receives immediate feedback to help build confidence before certification.

7. Certification Test

The certification test includes the required white and black smoke evaluations used to determine pass or fail for Method 9. If the trainee does not pass, they can review their results and retest as many times as needed.

8. Receive Certification

Upon passing, the trainee’s Method 9 certificate is emailed automatically and is also available in their dashboard.

9. Recertification Reminder

When it is time to recertify, we will send a reminder email.
