Our Virtual Smoke School certification process is designed to be simple, flexible, and user-friendly. With just a VR headset, an internet connection, and a quiet space, you can complete your EPA Method 9 certification anytime and anywhere—without the hassle of travel, weather delays, or group testing. This guide walks you through each step, from setting up your headset and workspace, to completing the lecture, practice, and official certification test. Along the way, you’ll learn how to connect to Wi-Fi, adjust your equipment for comfort, review standard values, and understand the grading process. Every detail is covered to ensure you feel prepared, confident, and supported throughout your certification journey.


Step 1: Purchase the VR Headset

  • Purchase our standalone VR headset (includes test license + lecture).
  • If you already have a headset, buy a test license for recertification (emailed instantly).

Step 2: Complete the Online Lecture

  • The lecture is provided at no additional cost with your registration and available anytime..
  • Review the online lecture before your first certification.
  • Covers opacity observation principles and documentation requirements.
  • Complete the quiz for each section. Once you finish the lecture, you may download your lecture certificate.

Step 3: Set Up Your Workspace

  • Sit comfortably, extend your arm for controller calibration.
  • Choose a quiet, well-lit space.
  • Ensure stable internet.
  • Charge your VR headset & controller.

Step 4: Power On the VR Headset

Press and hold the power button until a blue light appears.

Step 5: Using the Controller

  • Ensure controller is charged and paired.
  • Recenter screen by pressing the lower button.
  • Use the trigger button to select items.

Step 6: Adjust the Headset

  • Adjust straps for comfort.
  • Slide lenses until image is clear.

Step 7: Connect to Wi-Fi

  • Connect to Wi-Fi to access the test and submit results.
  • Have your password ready before beginning.
Special Wi-Fi Instructions

If your network uses a captive portal (login page), follow these steps:

  1. Select Wi-Fi: Choose the correct network inside the VR app.
  2. Captive Portal Opens: A login screen will appear in a virtual room.
  3. Complete Login: Enter the password and accept any prompts.

Return to the App: The portal closes automatically after login.

If You Get Lost: Press the Home button to return to the main menu.

Step 8: Check Battery Life

  • Controller batteries last ~20 hours.
  • Headset runs ~2.5 hours (keep plugged in for longer use).

Step 9: Log In and Start the Test

  • Log in with your registered email.
  • You’ll have 90 minutes (average 45 minutes to complete).

Step 10: Review Standard Values

Before each test, you’ll see examples of white and black smoke at different opacities to calibrate your perception.

Step 11: Take the Practice Test

  • Answer practice opacity questions in 5% increments.
  • Correct values displayed after each response.
  • Unlimited practice available (timer still runs).

Step 12: Take the Certification Test

The official certification test includes 25 random opacity values for both white and black smoke. You’ll have 8 seconds per value and can replay each once before submitting.

Step 13: Grading

  • Deviation ≤ 5% = Score 1, 10% = 2, 15% = 3.
  • Total deviation ≤ 37 required to pass.
  • Certificates emailed instantly upon passing.
  • Review missed readings if you need to retake.

Step 14: Store and Care for Your Headset

  • Store in its box or a dark space to protect lenses.
  • Charge every 2 months to maintain battery health.
  • Clean lenses with a lint-free cloth only.
